Modern Patchwork Summer 2014

Have you seen the summer issue of Modern Patchwork?  I think it's the best one so far!

One of the things that makes it extra special for me is that my pillows made the front cover. WaHoo!!!
It's so exciting to see things I design get published and making the cover is like a cherry on top!

These two pillows were fun to make and really quite easy. Rather than my usual envelope enclosure, I opted for zippers that became a part of the finished design on the back. In the magazine you can't really see the back well enough to appreciate how it looks but in the photo below you can see how the zipper tape is aligned with the design on the pillow front and the color matches the lattice of the front patchwork. I love how they turned out and the zippers really were easy so don't let the idea of a sewing a zipper scare you off. Give it a try and find out for yourself. They aren't hard. Promise.

My issue just arrived today so the first order of business after my morning walk was settling in with a cup of tea and browsing through the magazine. There are several projects that I really like including one by my friend and bee mate Cindy Wiens of Live a Colorful Life. Her design is a modern take on the traditional churn dash block shown below. Way to go Cindy.  : )

The issue is full of projects for the home, the table, your bed . . .  even a few accessory items. There are several great quilts from full sized ones for the bed to smaller ones for your wall or snuggling on the couch. There are also some good articles including ones by Jacquie Gering and Cheryl Arkison so I've got more reading in store for this evening.  : )

Look for Modern Patchwork Summer 2014 at your local shop or go here to buy direct.

What's your favorite quilting magazine(s)? Are you a subscriber or do you prefer to pick them up at the newsstand when they catch your eye or feature a project you want to make? Do tell . . . I'd love to know.

  4. Congratulations Anne, this is such exciting news! I'm subscribed to machine quilting unlimited, and I think that's the only subscription that I kept. I can find so much online that I found myself not making anything from the magazines. It's a lot to read all the blogs already :)

  5. Love these pillows! Designing around the exposed zippers is a great idea. I have no local source for quilt mags (local shops carry a few books, but not magazine). Will seek this one out online.

  6. I love your pillows, Anne! And especially carrying the beautiful color around the back with the zipper. I'm a big fan of zipper closures for pillows. Thanks for the shout-out about my quilt, too. I"m going to blog about the same thing this week. :)

  8. You're a cover girl again! Oh wow! Gosh, I'm so happy for you, Anne. And so proud of you! I can't tell you how much I admire and respect your skills. And I sure wish you lived closer! I want to pick your brain, take classes from you, and just hang in the sewing room together. Maybe by proximity, some of your talents would spill over onto me. (?!) So, so thrilled for you! Congratulations!

  11. Fabulous! You're a cover girl! (Remember those ads?)

I like that you used a zipper, as I sometimes get tired of the poofing that an envelope closure seems to have at the back. This was they are nice and neat, and in your case, worked into the design. Congratulations on such a lovely design and on being on the cover!

    Woo hoo!!

  12. I have to find this magazine. I have purchased past copies at JoAnn's but they did not have one the last time I was in.

  13. I am late to the party on this post, but I love these pillows and the quilt by Cindy and will look for this issue. McCall's is my favorite quilting magazine, and yes I am a subscriber. I have favored traditional patterns and resisted the modern trend, but lately modern patterns attract me with their clean lines that focus on the fabric, so maybe I am growing as a quilter. ;)

  14. patchwork Madras texture is making such waves, and is back with a blast, that it ended up important to recognize what it is. It is fundamentally madras texture cut into cut into strips and after that sewn together to frame patches of squares of 3,4,5,6 inches estimate. Furthermore, is the perfect texture for summers as clarified. I find a very good website for the best best pillow for side sleeper with neck and back pain. you can visit this site.
