Seeing Green

I live in Colorado along the Front Range. It's not the greenest place to live. While I truly love Colorado,
I miss the green of the midwest. This year though, Colorado had one of the wettest, longest springs in recent memory and everything is green. Even our normally pathetic grass is green. It won't last long now that the heat of summer has arrived, but I've certainly enjoyed a renewed focus on the color green. So here's to Seeing Green. Lots of green.

The green grass . . .

A variety of greens in the open space right behind our house. I love the intense shadows in the late evening this time of year.

Little green frogs in the pond down the street . . .

The pretty green eyes of one of my fuzzies . . .

Green outside and green inside too. Green is the base color throughout my house. It's a wonderful neutral that works beautifully with my seasonal decor. We even have new green couches.

Green plants plus lots of green leaf dishes in the dining room . . .

Green glass vases in the bedroom. One morning I woke up to find the sun shining through these vases, creating a lovely green shadow on the wall.

An original painting by Aunt Lu, done when she was in her 80's.

Lovely green jewelry by my daughter, Emily. Check out her website and new online store here.
This is one of my favorites. It even has a green saying.

If you read my posts regularly, you know I've just posted about making green quilt blocks for my bee. I'm also gradually working on the leafy checkerboard quilt for my bedroom. All this means I have lots of green fabrics to choose from, ranging from traditional to modern prints to solids and of course Kaffe.

Paint swatches and an emerald green block for the Pantone Color of the Year 2013.

My newest green quilt . . . Offset formally known as Tumbler.

And last, but never least, leaves, leaves and more leaves . . . after all, I'm SpringLeaf Studios.

Bluish green leaves . . .

Yellow-green leaves . . .

SpringLeaf Studios green . . .

If you're just joining me, my first color post was The Color Purple. I don't have any specific plan for this series other than continuing to post on different colors as the mood and inspiration strikes. I hope you find it inspiring. Look for future color posts at the top of my blog.

Thanks for reading. Now take a look at my daughter, Emily's green post. She is playing along and doing her own color stories on her blog. She takes some amazing photos.

  1. Your photography is very striking, I just loved looking at it. Today I was sorting fabric and I was putting away a lot of green scraps. Green has always been my least favorite color and I was thinking I need to make a green quilt and see if it changes my mind. I might end up giving away some of my green fabric as I have so much of it. And I have no clue how I got it. Your photos of your green items almost changed my mind to liking the color. Lovely post.

  3. Lovely, lovely greenness! I know what you mean about not seeing much green. I have lived in the San Diego area 55 of my 68 years (except from age 18 to 31), and the weather has changed so very much, sadly. I used to live more inland, and the only hot weather was in September, when we had the "Santa Ana" winds that brought heat to us from the desert. Now it's hot there, and here nearer the coast, all year long. We haven't had much in the way of rain in years! The last year we had tons of rain was in 1998, and really no rain to speak of at all in almost 10 years! It really frightens me.

On a happier note, I have just found you and Springleaf Studios, and enjoy following your blog. You have such a happy smile and I am going to attempt the Drunkard's Path Quilt Along, even though I only saw it yesterday!

I'll be looking for more "color posts"!

  4. This is very timely today. A new friend was helping me to square up the blocks in my zigzag rainbow quilt. We were talking about her decorating color scheme, so I took examples of aqua-turquoise to compare in her apt. Your photos are just the thing to show her the variations in color, since she does love nature. An excellent post, and I will look forward to more.

  5. I find your love of green intriguing because green, at least in decor and apparel, has always been my least favorite color. I love green outdoors though! Even my stash is nearly devoid of green. Your photos are beautiful and so now I'm questioning myself, "Why am I adverse to green?" But, I have no answer. Something for me to think about. Love your kitty's green eyes!

  6. Love your bird silhouette! Your greens are great. Usually we have a lush green grass, but we've been breaking lack of rainfall and temperature records here so I'm jealous. The Wet coast is a dry coast here in B.C.

  7. What fun decor you have.....I can see that I would love your colorful "green" house. My husband's favorite color is green and my favorite room in my house is our fresh spring-green guest room. You are quite the photographer, Anne!
